Global leaders increasingly turning to sustainability reporting

A News item from Business Respect, Issue Number 112, dated 2 Aug 2007

Four fifths of the 15 top global brands have started to produce sustainability reports according to a recent review by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). In addition, 43 percent of the top 100 global brands issue such reports.

The GRI reviewed the reports produced by the companies named as the top world brands by Interbrand and Business Week. All of the top five, made up of Coca-Cola, Microsoft, IBM, General Electric and Nokia, produce reports.

The GRI said that the review showed that: "sustainability reporting is becoming a more utilised tool in maintaining and building brand - often a company's most valuable asset".

The GRI said that more than 60 percent of the reporters in the top 100 use the GRI guidelines as their framework for reporting.
