The Dow Jones Sustainability Group Index

The Dow Jones Sustainability Group Index seeks to meet the financial markets demands for an investable index to benchmark the performance of investments in companies which are striving to become more sustainable.

It includes around 200 companies said to represent the top 10% of leading companies committed to sustainable practices.

The Index recognises the importance of integrating economic, environmental and social factors in business strategy and places particular stress on innovative technology, corporate governance, the interests of shareholders, industry leadership and corporate responses to changes in society.

At its core is the sustainability assessment. The assessment includes general sustainability criteria which are applied to all industries and industry group specific criteria which take into account the characteristics of certain industries. The criteria relate to strategy, policy and management. They reflect sustainability opportunities (to assess a company's ability to exploit them) and sustainability risks (to assess a company's ability to reduce or avoid sustainability-related costs and risks).

The Index is reviewed annually by an advisory committee which consists of experts from both the financial sector and in corporate sustainability.
