The United Nations Global Compact

In January 1999 the UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan challenged world business leaders to embrace and enact the United Nations Global Compact. The Compact seeks support for nine principles of human rights, labour and environmental sustainability as they apply to business practices and public policy.

Business is encouraged to foster human rights by supporting and respecting the protection of international human rights within their sphere of influence and by making sure that their own corporations are not complicit in human rights abuses.

Business should also, according to the Compact, support labour standards by ensuring freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining. There should be the abolition of any form of forced or compulsory labour, and child labour.

In terms of the environment, business is urged to take a precautionary approach to environmental management by undertaking initiatives to reduce environmental impact, and through promoting innovation in the use of new, greener technologies.
