Ethical Trading InitiativeThe Ethical Trading Initiative describes itself as an alliance of companies, non-governmental organisations and trade union organisations committed to working together to identify and promote good practice in the implementation of codes of labour practice. It is supported by the UK Government's Department for International Development and by the Department for Trade and Industry (DTI) It seeks to make substantial improvements in the lives of poor working people around the world by developing, and encouraging the use of, a set of standards in trade. The ETI's Base Code, based on International Labour Organisation conventions, covers nine areas. These are: the free choice of employment, freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining, safe and hygienic working conditions, child labour, a living wage, working hours, non-discrimination, the provision of regular employment and the absence of harsh or inhumane treatment. ETI members are expected to adopt or incorporate the Code and require that their suppliers meet agreed standards with performance measured, transparent and, ultimately, a precondition to further business. For further information, visit their website at http://www.ethicaltrade.org ==== This page is part of the Corporate Social Responsibility site of Mallen Baker. It is constantly updated with analysis and opinion pieces on different aspects of CSR - with a mostly international focus, with some particular interests on the UK. Initiatives such as the Ethical Trading Initiative will be covered, and updated, periodically on the site, and in the free CSR fortnightly email newsletter associated with the site, Business Respect. The easiest way to keep in touch is to subscribe. |
